Choose a Setting

Guidance on selecting the appropriate PSE setting for a PSE Site Activity in PEARS.

The setting of a PSE Site Activity describes the type of environment where the change is taking place. This may differ from the physical location of the site or organization.

TIP: Select the most specific PSE setting rather than defaulting to a generic location category.

Examples

  • After-school programs — Select "Before and after-school programs" as the setting, even if the program is held at a school or faith-based center.

  • Mobile food initiatives — A fresh produce bus at a food assistance site should be categorized as "Mobile vending/food trucks."

  • Multiple activities — If conducting additional work at a school that also houses an after-school program, create separate reports for each type of PSE work.

Special Setting Types

Four setting types require special consideration and should only be selected when operating independently:

  • Gardens

  • Bicycle and walking paths

  • Youth organizations

  • Libraries

If these settings exist within a larger site (such as a garden at a school), report them using the setting of the larger site where they are physically located.

Using "Other"

Before selecting "Other," review all available setting options. Examples that may fit the "Other" category include cafeterias and city-wide policies.
